Generative AI and the future of education

This paper presents the reflections by Ms. Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director-General for Education at UNESCO, on generative AI and the future of education. The paper identifies some of the fundamental questions that generative AI raises for education, which include a reflection on the need to define what will be the role of teachers in this new technological context.

While recognizing the potential of AI to support and enrich learning, Ms. Giannini warns against the risks of introducing AI in education without appropriate checks and claims for a more cautious approach to generative AI in education. She also emphasizes that generative AI and digital technology more broadly should not undermine the authority and status of teachers, and that frontier technology should not come in replacement of well-supported teachers.
